When Mississippi has Flowed Backward

"Tied until the shore on dawn, and a hickory the tree has fallen to the boat - killing the black, Ben, and breaking the left arm of the pattern LaRouche.
New Madrid in 1811 consisted of 400 log cabins. St. Louis and Memphis was small cities. "Duty of a category-8 quake arrives there today, these cities would be destroyed mostly and miles of the people killed," says Or.S.G.S.
Seem by USGS: "The probability of a magnitude 6 to 7 earthquake arriving in the New Madrid seismic zone inside the prójimo 50 years is more grains than 90 #percent."
"The river that falls so quickly when it had increased, has taken with him whole groves of cottonwood trees. A big a lot of fish has remained in the banks.
"We have believed that we have to surely given. Fr. Joseph has given absolution. We have not seen any one of the others two boats. One of them have not seen never again - neither know if the men in them have been flooded. We were all big terror, in the meantime dead.
"It was a current in disposal backward. Then this agitates arrested, and dulcemente the river has been very again.
"The terrible darkness of the atmosphere saturated with sulphurous steam, and the violence of the tempestuous thundering noise, has formed a scene further imagination.
"I thinks there were two big crashes on means an hour aparta and a lot of small ones between and after. The water has increased so that a tree in the bank -- whose the top has to have been 30 feet above the level of river -- has been covered throughout.
Which is worse hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires of forests, vase slides, volcanoes or earth quakes?
"This has been followed in some how many minutes by the complete saturation of the atmosphere with sulphurous steam, that causes total darkness.
"It took three boats again Orleans with some skins bought in St. Louis. In the evening of Have to of. 15, tied up eight miles north of New Madrid near of the house of my premier, John LeClerq.
The USA the Geological Survey estimates the three main quakes in the central Mississippi fence in the winter of 1811-12 when "most of powerful history of USA."
"We achieved out of the bank in on an average hour, and looked in my clock. It was 3 or'clock. It could seetrees in the shore falling. Big masses of earth tumbled to the river.
Another eyewitness account (edited here by brevity) has been deposed by Eliza Bryan, a resident of New Madrid, four years after the event.
"We have done any effort to discover how many people had been killed, in spite of the fact than era has said us that many were. We have seen dead bodies of many. We have seen afterwards the people flooded floating in the river.
His And the Truly horrible
"Thunder was the cries of the affrighted the inhabitants that run to and fro, no knowingly of where to go, of what to do - the cries of the fowls and beasts of each species - the cracking of the trees that fall -- and the roaring of Mississippi that was retrograde by some how many minutes.
"The Trees have been launched down. The People have said big cracks in the very deep earth - pulled 10 or 15 miles. "We were has said there is a new lake in Tennessee (Reelfoot) and the courses of water have been there changed. The River Yazoo has a new mouth.
LaRoche Explain - preserved in the Missouri Historical Review files -- has been written New Orleans Feb. 20, 1812, when after-the crashes were still frequent. It had completed fair a disastrous trip that has begun with three flat-boats:
Last year, 470 measurable quakes has been recorded in the Central Mississippi bar.
" Feb. 7, on 4 a.m., A concussion there has been place so more violent that those that had proceeded the, that has been designated 'the crash carry.'
" There was with me the Fr. Joseph of the Mission to the Osages, going back house in France -- also Jaques Menier, Dominic Margins, Leon Sarpy, Henry Lamel, five other men and the Black slave, Ben, the one who has been killed in New Madrid.
"The Inhabitants escaped in each direction, that supposes that there was less danger in a distance that hovers of the river.
The USGS finger, "the Earthquakes in the central United States affect a lot of zones more grains than earthquakes of similar magnitude in the the occidental USA
"The charges of skin have been launched to the river by the people that crowded to the ship with #prpers until we could take no more."Another Account
"was present in the earthquake that lately arrived on and down the mouth of the River Ohio, along both shores of the River Mississippi.
There was no seismographs behind then. Even so, the extension of changes of earth indicates three, #closely tied, quakes --magnitudes of 8 or more in Richter seismograph climbing of points of ten folds.
" All the hard crashes, the earth was horribly torn to pieces. Hundreds of acres has been covered on by sand that has issued fisuras. In some places, there was a substance resembling coal.
"For eighteen month, have been #to constrain by the fear that our houses would fall of continuing it crashes and so lived little, light camps. Some people escaped, never to go back, but more drifted behind."Giant Blame of earth
"After we have had supper, have been to sleep. I have been awakened by an accident like thunder. The boat turned in his side so that Lamel, who slept beside, has been launched in me. We have fallen against the side. It was very dark.
"The river has increased then 15 to 20 feet perpendicularly, and developed. The banks overflowed with the retrograde current. Boats that had remained in the sand has been now torn of his moorings.
Tectonic Events like a 5.8 earthquake in California and an eruption of volcano in Washington - riveted our attention. But have failed to match the New Madrid Quakes of Have to of. 1811-Feb. 1812 That has caused the mighty Mississippi River in brief to flow backward.
"At the beginning, the Mississippi alike to recede of his banks - his waters that gather on top of as a mountain. For a moment, a lot of boats that were in his way again Orleans has remained bare sand. The poor sailors have done his escape of them.
" December 16, 1811, on 2 a.m., Have been #to visit by a violent crash of an earthquake. It has been accompanied by a very terrible noise resembling loud but distant thunder, but more hoarse and vibration.
" There was a lot, crashes lighter daily until the 23rd of January 1812. Then, an arrived like violent when the plus severe of the previous ones.
"We have seen two houses in fire in the left bank. When have come in New Madrid, had houses also that they burn there.
"It has been it lately discovered that a lake (Reelfoot) has been formed in the opposite cost of Mississippi Indian country ( west Tennessee). It is up 100 miles length, one in six wide miles, and depths of 10 to 50 feet.
A Priest Recollection In a appendage to the Rouche tale, Father Joseph has declared:
The west of border of Mississippi had been sold by France in the fair United States eight years before the quake. Missouri Was a territory, no encara a state.
"Lamel Has cut the rope that has tied us to a log. Inside a moment, so big a wave come on top of the river that I never seen to one likes him March We has carried he protects in the north, up-common, by more that a mile. The extensive water out of the banks -- coverage three or four miles inland.
"Santo Francisco, Calif., Earthquake of 1906 (magnitude 7.8) has been felt 350 miles was. The premier New Madrid earthquake rank bells of church in Boston, Massa., Miles miles was."
"It was big pain with an arm broken. That were with me, there is not except Father Joseph. My personal loss do to be $600 (on $12,000 by today of coin.)"
"Of this time until the 4th of February, the earth was continual agitation - visibly agitating like sweet sea.
Consider the eyewitness deposition of Sign The Rock, a trader of French skin of St. Louis.
Most of powerful quake of the register is the Richter 8.4 since Alaska quake of 1964.
Question:

"Everywhere there was noise like thunder. The earth shook the trees down. The air was fat with something like smoke. There was a lot of lightning.
